Abstract

"Focus: Technology" piece on Saco-based Transparent Audio Inc., a producer of high-end audio and video cables, power cords, and surge protectors. Many criticize high-end cables like Transparent's, questioning their ability to improve sound, and pointing out the high markup on the product. But others, like Bob Ludwig of Gateway Studios in Portland, swear by the quality. Ludwig, who mastered 22 Grammy-nominated albums last year, exclusively uses Transparent cable. Josh Clark, manager of operations and product design at Transparent Audio, spends his days in the company's $500,000 listening room - figuring out which cables work well and which prototypes are worth pursuing. Founded in 1980 by Jack Sumner, Karen Sumner, and Carl Smith, Transparent Audio employs 34 workers.
