Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the No New Taxes rally, held March 20 at the State House in Augusta. Several business owners like Andrew Charles of Haven's Candies attended the rally, voicing their opposition to any new taxes this session. Jim McGregor of the Maine Merchants Association said there is no appetite for any tax increase of any kind. Governor John Baldacci's budget proposal calls for raising cigarette taxes by one dollar a pack and hiking other taxes on tobacco products.
