Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the need for increased enforcement of the state's tobacco tax since it was raised to two dollars a pack, noting a decline in cigarette sales at Maine stores that border New Hampshire. Members of the Legislature's Appropriations Committee want stricter enforcement against Mainers who cross the border to buy large amounts of cigarettes, but Maine Revenue Services says that will be difficult. With comments by Sen. Joe Perry (D-Bangor), Rep. Jeremy Fischer (D-Presque Isle), and J. Scott Moody of the Maine Heritage Policy Center.
