Abstract

"Focus on Northern Maine" piece on the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM), a publicly funded magnet school in Limestone founded in 1994 by the state Legislature. The school has been underfunded, and its enrollment has ranged from 105 to165--short of the 300 to 450 students expected by 2005. Executive Director Walt Warner, who was hired in 2005, is asking for more state money and plans to fundraise so the school won't have to shut down. MSSM kids sweep math competitions in Maine and virtually all go on to college. Warner says supporting the school is cheaper than trying to teach such advanced courses in local schools.
