Abstract

Profile of and interview with Richard Pattenaude, 60, who ended his 16-year tenure as president of the University of Southern Maine to become chancellor of the University of Maine System. Pattenaude brings experience expanding the facilities and programs at USM to his new job, with its challenges of tight state funding and tuition affordability. He discusses fund-raising, program development, tuition increases, how Maine's new community college system affects enrollment at the universities, and former chancellor Joseph Westphal's failed consolidation plan.
