Abstract

"There and Back" piece on the high value of waterfront property in Maine, noting that there was a time when waterfront property was unappealing. Historian Clarence Tucker explains that the Captain Butler homestead was deliberately built without a view of the water because in those days the "waterfront" ruled people's lives and was a loud, over-crowded, smelly place.
