Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on the increase in "mixed-use" commercial development projects, which attempt to replicate the beneficial characteristics of an urban landscape. Because of Maine's geography, the majority of retail projects are not mixed-use and walkable. Most rely on offices and residencies, rather than being based on retail, as are most such projects around the country. With examples of mixed-use projects that are in the works in Portland, Saco, Augusta, and Wiscasset.
