Abstract

"Business Maine: Statewide" piece reporting that three companies that collect information on which prescription medications doctors prescribe are suing Maine and Vermont over laws designed to keep that information private. Both states have laws that go into effect Jan. 1 that allow doctors to opt out of providing information on their prescription-writing habits. IMS Heatlh, Wolters Kluwer Health, and Verispan filed complaints asking federal courts to block the states from enforcing such laws. The companies say the information they gather is used to monitor the safety of new medications. But defenders of the legislation say the information is used to help drug companies tailor their marketing.
