Abstract

"Business Maine: Northern" piece on Katahdin Paper Co.'s mill in Millinocket, which recently stopped using phosphoric acid for whitening paper products after the chemical spurred a large algae bloom along 75 miles of the Penobscot River. The company has found an alternative to the chemical, though it costs twice as much. The state Department of Environmental Protection issued a notice to the mill in August for emitting too much phosphorus in the river, after members of the Penobscot Nation's department of Marine Resources found the algae bloom.
