Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the Legislature's appropriations committee, which has directed its staff to review several proposals to consolidate state programs and agencies in an effort to save money. Governor John Baldacci said the merger of the Department of Mental Health with the Department of Human Services during his first term should have been followed by additional consolidations. The committee must recommend $10.1 million in savings for the Legislature to consider in January but may need millions more to make up for shortfalls in revenue vehicles like the corporate income tax.
