Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on the Alliance for Maine's Future, which is drafting a citizen petition to pressure lawmakers to create a commission to reduce state spending and taxes. Tony Payne, executive director of the Alliance, said the group hopes the Legislature will acts on its own to create the commission, which was recommended in the Brookings Institution report last year. The Alliance is made up of trade organizations, businesses, and business owners. Governor John Baldacci says the Alliance should support the initiatives he already has underway, citing school consolidation and the county jail initiative.
