Abstract

The Bangor Region Wellness Council was launched in 2002 to help local companies prod employees to adopt better health habits. Since then, 79 companies, representing 26,000 employees, have signed up. Bangor stands out for its business-driven organization and the way it has effected improvement in several health-related areas, including obesity and smoking. Participating companies, such as Cianbro Corp. of Pittsfield, see controlling runaway medical costs as the payback for offering financial incentives to employees who adopt better health habits. With details on workplace wellness programs and privacy issues.
