Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece reporting on a recent study that shows the number of upper-level state management and policy-making positions has increased by nearly 45 percent over the last decade. The Legislature's Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability says the total number of state workers in the executive branch went up by 1.41 percent from 1997 to the 13,646 upper-level jobs in the state recorded this year. Sen. Elizabeth Mitchell (D-Vassalboro) said the agency will now examine why there has been an increase. Mitchell said one trend that likely has accounted for some of the growth is the government's increasing reliance on technology and technology workers.
