Abstract

"The Third Sector" piece on how foundations are engaging in "mission investing," above their five percent annual grant requirement. Since 1999, Sandy River Charitable Foundation in Farmington has invested 10 percent of its assets annually in nonprofits and for-profits aligned with its mission. If Maine foundations were to meet a 2 percent challenge, beneficiaries in the state could be working with an additional $31 million annually. To promote the idea, the Maine Philanthropy Center invited a group of national leaders versed in mission investing to brief foundation leaders this fall.
