Abstract

"Focus on Safety & Security" piece on Lisa St. Hilaire-Crites, security officer for Mechanics Savings Bank in Auburn. In an interview, she discusses how she protects against scammers who issue fraudulent checks to credulous victims. She estimates that customers try to deposit between two and 10 fraudulent checks per month. Several customers have lost thousands of dollars apiece. Staff are trained to recognize the scams and to intervene when possible. The bank is launching a Stop, Look, and Listen campaign next year that will train bank tellers in Maine to detect fraudulent checks.
