Abstract

On Nov. 29, Athenahealth, a provider of Internet business services for physicians, announced it would locate a new operations center in Belfast that would employ as many as 600 people by 2013. The efforts of Joe Slocum, Belfast city manager, were vital in securing the deal. But Matt Jacobson, president of Maine & Co., says a concerted approach to business attraction like Belfast's is still new to Maine. Though Maine's municipal officials may not have warmed to business solicitation as much as their peers in other states, national site selectors say Maine is competitive with other states, largely due to business incentives like Pine Tree Development Zones. In Houlton, town manager Doug Hazlett hopes to make his northern Maine town the next success story. With additional comments by Tony McDonald, a partner at CB Richard Ellis/The Boulos Co.; Paul Badeau, marketing director at the Lewiston-Auburn Economic Growth Council; and Carl Byers, Athenahealth CFO.
