Abstract

"The Third Sector" piece on how some Maine nonprofits are finding success by merging. Rockland-based Youthlinks, which won the Maine Community Foundation's Noyce Award for Nonprofit Excellence, merged with Broadreach Family and Community Services, which had already gone through three mergers to expand services in Waldo and Knox counties. Greater impact and larger scale, rather than economics, generally drive such mergers. Maine has one of the most robust nonprofit sectors in the nation, supported by one of the smallest philanthropic communities.
