Abstract

"Focus on Greater Portland" piece on John Leonard, president and CEO of Portland-based insurer, The MEMIC Group. The Maine Employers Mutual Insurance Company was created by the state in 1993 with a mission to bring affordable workers' compensation insurance to Maine businesses. Since then, the cost of such insurance has dropped 32 percent and the state's injury rate has decreased 35 percent. In an interview, Leonard describes starting MEMIC, which is now licensed to sell insurance in 42 states; how the company changed the face of workers' comp in Maine; and the company's upcoming expansion in Portland.
