Abstract

"Focus: Building & Real Estate" piece on Brunswick-based Downeast Energy & Building Supply, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. The company has grown from a coal and firewood operation to a multi-faceted business offering home heating fuel, building supplies, and even house lots. John Peters, Downeast Energy's president, says part of the company's success has been willingness to change. Tom Juenemann, director of the Institute for Family-Owned Business at the University of Southern Maine, says bringing in outsiders is key to succeeding as a family-owned business. Though a third generation of the Morrell family, brothers Bob and Dick Morrell, still play key roles at the company, Peters was named president five years ago. Details.
