Abstract

"Focus: Technology" piece on Scarborough-based CLYNK, which operates 11 bottle and can redemption centers located at Hannaford stores in Maine. The company's proprietary software streamlines the redemption process by counting and crushing cans and bottles, separating them by distributor, recording data, and depositing money into the appropriate customer account, all at breakneck speed. Frank Whittier, vice president and co-founder, said that CLYNK has been well-received. In Scarborough, 95 percent of the town's households have signed up for the service. Tracy Hawkins, CEO, says that the data collected during the count-and-crush process is unique, allowing returnables to be routed to the correct distributor. Whittier said CLYNK hopes to scale its patented technology to other, non-bottle-bill states.
