Abstract

Though professional photographers have much to say that's positive about digital technology, the widespread changeover from film to digital technology over the past decade is costing Maine's commercial photographers. Jerry Jalbert, who has operated Jalbert Photography in Fort Kent for 32 years, says he'll close by the end of this year due to the competition brought on by semi-pro amateurs nicknamed "Digital Debbies" or "Digital Dans." Kate Philbrick, a professional photographer in Gorham, markets her business online to compete with amateur digital photographers. Stephen Schaefer, owner of 35-year-old Maineline Studio in Calais, has embraced digital technology, and maintains that the best way to compete with digital dabblers is to offer a superior product. With additional comments by photographer Dan Rodrigue, and Michael Berube of Good Photos in Denmark.
