Abstract

"From the Ground Up" piece on Maine Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) restrictions relating to vernal pools. The Maine DEP requires a 250-foot setback around the temporary wetlands. In Standish last year, $325,000 in local funds was spent on an eight-acre parcel to accommodate a new community center. Significant vernal pools were discovered post-purchase, rendering the lot unbuildable and essentially unsellable. With comments by Andrew Hamilton, an environmental and land use attorney in Eaton Peabody's Bangor office.
