Abstract

New Brunswick-based Cooke Aquaculture, with operations in Maine, is reviving its Machiasport processing facility to handle its farm raised salmon. The facility was closed in 2004 because of environmental violations and a disease outbreak among the fish. The facility could be a catalyst for future growth of the state's once-promising aquaculture industry. Cooke bought up Maine's three largest salmon farming companies after legal battles and a disease outbreak brought the industry to a near standstill by 2003. Since then the company has experienced exponential growth.
