Abstract

Richard Anderson started Maine's first online community publication, VillageSoup, based on the idea of "open source" journalism. He then bought Courier Publications, which published six Midcoast newspapers and which had been his major competitor. The merged company is now called VillageNetMedia. With a look at Anderson's successful business model, at two reporters who made the transition to online journalism, and at how Anderson's purchase affected Courier's individual publications.
