Abstract

New Brunswick-based, J.D. Irving Ltd.-owned Brunswick News has expressed interest in the sale of the Portland Press Herald and two sister newspapers by Blethen Maine Newspapers. The three Irving brothers, who run the family's wide-spread operations, are collectively worth about $5.8 billion and have increased their investments in Maine over the past decade. According to the editor of an independent New Brunswick newspaper, Bob Rupert, the Irvings have put Victor Mlodecki in charge of their newspaper holdings, a man "who has an extreme bottom-line mentality, very little respect for editorial quality or integrity, and no time at all for unions." With details on Irving's holdings and influence in Maine.
