Abstract

"Economic Developments." Economic indicators for the Portland region are all positive: retail vacancy has fallen from 40 percent to 15percent, and the unemployment rate is 2 percent. But the majority of area employers have difficulty finding skilled workers, and businesses are having trouble keeping up with the rapid growth in information and technology. The author calls for not just job creation but a transition to high quality, high paying jobs.
