Abstract

Profile of Richard Connor, 61, editor and publisher of the Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre, Penn. He has teamed up with Texas-based HM Capital Partners to buy Blethen Maine Newspapers from the Seattle Times Co. In 1978, Connor, a conservative, was working at a Capital Cities paper in Michigan and oversaw one of the most contentious strikes in the history of the Newspaper Guild. However, he is well thought of in the industry as a good businessman. Tom Bell, a reporter at a Blethen Maine newspaper, the Portland Press Herald, and president of the Guild, said Connor has proved "flexible and honest."
