Abstract

This legislative session, the Natural Resources Committee is considering six bills covering large-scale groundwater extraction in Maine, many prompted by concerns about environmental effects and truck traffic related to Poland Spring's commercial water extraction. Such concerns led to recent bans on the practice in Newfield and Shapleigh; and last summer, local opposition prompted the Kennebunk, Kennebunkport and Wells Water District to back away from a proposed 30-year contract with Poland Spring.
