Abstract

"Focus on Western Maine" piece on two paper companies that were preparing to go public just as the recession started. Verso Paper Corp., with mills in Bucksport and Jay, forged ahead, and its disappointing IPO was followed by an even worse year in a hard-hit industry. However, Verso has invested heavily in its two mills to create new products and allow flexibility in switching from one paper grade to another. NewPage Corp. of Rumford, retreated from its IPO and is waiting for a better market to go public. With financial snapshots of Farmington, Norway, and Rumford.
