Abstract

"Public Engagement" piece on Portland's economy, in which employment and sales have fallen. Less diversified than the state as a whole, Portland's economy relies heavily on health care industries, fueled by the state's third-highest spending on Medicaid and 14th-highest spending on Medicare. In 2007, 64 businesses, representing 515 jobs, moved from Portland, with just over half as many businesses and jobs moving in.
