Abstract

"Third Sector" piece on Maine's predicament of accumulated budget deficits and the increasingly long waiting lists for housing for disabled adults. There are over 140 severely disabled adults on the priority one waiting list alone. Mary Chris and Paul Bulger of Cape Elizabeth, parents of an adult daughter with autism, and Brian Scanlon, the Region 1 Team Leader for the Department of Health and Human Services, used a model developed by Specialized Housing of Brookline, Mass. that helps families join together to create assisted living housing for their children. The final product, at 20 E Street in South Portland, is set up as nine condominiums, with each family contributing $1,700 a month for expenses, including live-in staff.
