Abstract

"Focus Banking & Finance" overview of the Maine State Bureau of Financial Institutions' report to the Legislature covering the first three quarters of 2010. Many institutions have rebounded since 2009 and are performing better in many respects than their national peers. The net income of the 28 Maine-based banks more than doubled between September 2009 and September 2010 and total assets increased while loans declined for the first time in a decade. The net income of Maine-based credit unions has achieved more modest growth and loan growth slowed. According to the bureau, Maine financial institutions are riding out the recession but without increased employment and economic growth, there will continue to be less money available for loans.
