Abstract

"Focus Transportation & Trade" piece on the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority's application for a grant to improve rail lines between Portland and Boston and how approval of the plan could lead to increased passengers and revenue as well as increasing the likelihood of extending Maine's passenger rail to Lewiston-Auburn and beyond. From 2005 to 2010 , the Downeaster's ridership increased from 250,000 to 474,000 and ticket revenues doubled to $6.6 million. Other destinations such as Bethel and Montreal could also attract ridership but the lines would need significant upgrades to support passenger rail speeds.
