Abstract

Maine's agricultural industry has been invigorated in recent years by younger farmers looking to benefit from a societal shift toward locally sourced goods by working smaller farms and often working multiple jobs to make ends meet. In 2009 Maine farms generated $578 million, a 15% drop from 2008 but still better than all the other New England states. Some new farmers are opting to lease land instead of purchasing it and are making use of educational opportunities such as the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association's journeyperson program, a two-year training, mentoring and business-planning course that helps prospective farmers transition from far apprenticeship to ownership
