Abstract

"Focus Northern Maine" piece about changes in Maine's paper industry due to private equity firms' acquisition of six of the 10 largest paper mills in the state. Supporters of the change say that private equity investment has brought money into the mills and helped to keep them competitive but others worry that some private equity firms are purely focused on short-term profit and are less concerned about the communities surrounding the mills. During the late 1990s, when smaller publicly-held companies faced economic challenges that led them to consider mills closures, private equity firms focused on short-term returns saw the mills as an investment opportunity. Some private equity firms have a reputation as being "opportunistic" while others are seen as innovative and fiscally disciplined, finding new ways to reuse mills and machinery for new purposes.
