Abstract

"Focus Northern Maine" piece on the Appalachian Mountain Club's acquisition of 66,000 acres and three sporting camps in the "100-mile Wilderness" area between Monson and Baxter State Park and the impact of increased tourism on the local economy. During the past eight years, AMC has created 50 miles of trails and new campsites, used local tradesmen for a $2 million lodge renovation, purchased supplies from local businesses, and hired locals and college students as staff. Many business owners and town officials support AMC's efforts and appreciate the boost to the local economy. But some, such as Mike Meyers, the executive director of the Maine Snowmobile Association, says that miles of snowmobile trails have been lost and objects to the AMC's use of some federal and state funding to finance the Maine Woods Initiative.
