Abstract

To prevent the abandonment of 233 miles of freight railroad in Northern Maine, the Maine State Department of Transportation purchased the tracks from the Montreal Maine & Atlantic Railway for $20 million in 2010 and is currently in the process of leasing the tracks from Millinocket to Madawaska to Eastern Maine Railway for no cost until the line is profitable. An interview with Ian Simpson, the general manager of EMR, focuses on the company's plans to make these lines profitable. EMR hopes to employ 30 people and will upgrade the tracks to retain existing customers and gain new customers through improved service.
