Abstract

"Focus Sustainability" commentary piece by Jay Friedlander, Sharpe-McNally chair of Green and Socially Responsible Business at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor. Friedlander states that sustainability promotes continuous innovation because sustainable businesses think about how their practices impact the environment and others and, in the process, discover new value and connections. He points out that sustainable practices do not guarantee a company's success but they can help companies find new solutions and opportunities. While the United States has been more resistant to adopting sustainability, countries such as China have embraced it out of necessity and their resulting innovations are making them leaders in industries formerly dominated by the United States.
