Abstract

The Portland Observatory Restoration Trust is raising money to restore the Munjoy Hill tower. Captain Lemuel Moody built it in 1807, and it was only shipping observatory in the country whose flag-based information could be seen first-hand by passing ships. Telegraphs and then radios eventually rendered such observatories obsolete.
