Abstract

"Focus Down East" piece on a Washington County project that aims to assist fishermen and farmers with computer software that will help them manage their businesses and more easily comply with government reporting requirements. Axiom Technologies, a small Machias-based communications company, won a $1.4 million federal stimulus grant to create simple and useful software for fishermen and blueberry farmers. Axiom also provides classes to teach computer skills to participants, family members, and others and provides laptops, software, and high-speed broadband connections to participants for the duration of the project. Some have already found practical uses for their new skills and equipment and others hope that fishermen can soon report fishing data online. Large companies such as Cherryfield Foods, Inc. have already been using technology to farm their blueberry fields more efficiently.
