Abstract

"Public Engagement" piece by Lance Dutson, CEO of The Maine Heritage Policy Center, about the center's recent study on Maine's voter registration system and the risks of permitting Election Day voter registration in Maine. While convenient for new voters, Dutson says Election Day registration could permit voter fraud to occur because non-citizens and non-eligible voters might be registered to vote. While supporters of same-day registration worry that eligible voters could be disenfranchised if they are mistakenly left off the voter list or inconvenienced by having to make two trips to the town office instead of one, Dutson says these concerns are addressed through the system's provisional and absentee ballot options.
