Abstract

Several Maine startups are tapping into the pet market which amounted to an estimated $50.8 billion spent in 2011. Despite the poor economy, Americans are still spending money for food, health care, and other supplies for their pets. A cluster of Portland-area companies, including Idexx Laboratories, Putney, Direct Vet Marketing, and VetEnvoy, are providing pet health products and services to veterinarians and consumers.
