Abstract

According to the annual Measures of Growth in Focus report prepared by the Maine Economic Growth Council with assistance from the Maine Development Council, the cost of health care in the state is one of five economic indicators given "red flag" status. Maine's total health care costs as a percent of GDP are 22.4%, the highest percentage of all the New England states and 7.3% more than the national average. The federal Affordable Care Act and Maine's public law 90 could help Maine businesses by lowering health care costs, but the ACA is being reviewed by the Supreme Court.
