Abstract

"Focus Banking & Finance" piece on increased membership in Maine's credit unions and credit unions nationwide, partly due to a public backlash against big banks, the success of the credit union model during the current recession, and the "buy local' movement. Spurred by proposed monthly debit card fees at the Bank of America, increased services fees at other big banks, and "Bank Transfer Day" on November 5, 2011, many have withdrawn their funds from larger banks and opened accounts at smaller banks and credit unions. In the three months since November 5, as many as 5.6 million Americans have switched all or some of their money to credit unions. With graphs charting the growth of credit unions and increased membership in Maine between 2008-2011.
