Abstract

Since 1959, the Lincoln Canoe and Kayak company in Freeport has earned a reputation for its handmade boats. Concerned about the feasibility and limitations of continuing with handmade production, current co-owner Marc Bourgoin reached out to an Arundel-based boatbuilding institution called The Landing School to form a partnership. This year Lincoln Canoe and Kayak supplied all the materials and customer base and the students utilized the school's technology to revamp two of Lincoln's existing molds as well as producing a new kayak model called the Seguin. Lincoln paid a bargain $40,000 in fees for the students' design work and the students benefited from real-world experience and the pressure of tight deadlines. During the first year of the partnership in 2011, Lincoln Canoe and Kayak's wholesale business doubled and sales are so strong that the company is working hard to meet the demand for their boats.
