Abstract

Article about the challenges faced by veterans, especially younger ones, when they return and try to find work in Maine, a state with about 132,000 veterans who represent 13% of Maine's population, the fourth-highest number of veterans per capita in the nation. Chris Tyll, a former Navy platoon leader and owner of Pat's Pizza in the Old Port, is chair of a new free Portland Veterans Network which will work with the Portland Chamber of Commerce to provide wellness services and mentors to Portland-area veterans. Educational institutions such as Southern Maine Community College and the University of Southern Maine have already pledged their support to assist veterans transition back into civilian life. Maine's CareerCenters have a long history of assisting veterans to create resumes and to help them translate their military experience into skills that are applicable to civilian jobs.
