Abstract

"Focus Northern Maine" piece on the Northern Maine Development Commission's recent $1.9 million award to launch its GreenME project, aimed at creating jobs and reducing energy costs in Aroostook and Washington counties through the creation of a market for wood biomass that can be supplied by Northern Maine's forest resources and manufacturing facilities. Local energy businesses, such as Daigle Oil Co. in Fort Kent, are beginning to offer wood pellet supplies and delivery services that will help make biomass heating a feasible alternative to oil heat. And several Northern Maine credit unions are offering renewable energy loans to their members of up to $12,000.
