Abstract

"Focus Travel & Tourism" piece about the increasing numbers of Canadian tourists who are traveling to Maine to take advantage of shopping bargains, lower prices on big ticket items, and recent exchange rates. In 2010, over 3 million tourists from Eastern Canada visited Maine overnight and an additional 2 million came for day trips. These numbers should increase in June when a new Canadian law will increase the dollar amount of merchandise Canadians can bring back to Canada before being taxed. Maine's strategies for the future should include attracting more younger and first-time visitors from Canada and promoting activities other than shopping to encourage repeat visits.
