Abstract

"Focus Travel & Tourism" piece on agritourism in Maine. In order to make a profit and in some cases stay afloat, small farms are creating or participating in public events in addition to traditional farm activities, accounting for 50% or more of the income of farms with income of less than $1 million. Several annual statewide agritourism events are Maine Maple Sunday, Great Maine Apple Sunday, and Maine Open Farm Day. Maine agritourism efforts should benefit from a bill passed in April that will reduce the liability exposure of farms that are open to the public. With sidebar on farm stays & farm vacations.
