Abstract

Piece on a new trend in construction management known as Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) in which the architect, contractor, and project owner work collaboratively throughout the life of the project. The new MaineGeneral Medical Center which is under construction in Augusta is being built using the IPD method. The method, which relies on shared ownership, compels each stakeholder to consider the impact of his or her own work in relation to the whole, which reduces waste and improves efficiencies. With sidebar in which John Scott of H.P. Cummings and Ellen Belknap of SMRT discuss the advantages to their respective firms of embracing the IPD method.
